Tara Canyon – the Balkan’s Natural Wonderland

Are you looking for something new to do this summer? Many consider Tara Canyon, a hidden jewel in the Balkans with amazing nature, fresh air, hospitable people, and delicious food. This beautiful, crystal clear river really is something to see and experience especially because of its truly amazing canyon. So no matter if you’re going with your friends or with your family including kids, this marvelous place has plenty to offer.

Where is it

Tara River is located in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina and it actually constitutes the border between the two countries. The river, which is the longest mountain river in Montenegro, runs through the Tara Canyon which is the deepest canyon in Europe, at 1343 meters. As it is, Tara Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world, right after the Grand Canyon in the U.S. state of Arizona. However, unlike the dry Grand Canyon, Tara Canyon is filled with life due to its immense greenery.

Tara Canyon, also known as the ‘teardrop of Europe’, is a part of Durmitor National Park in Montenegro and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canyon itself is about 60km long and approximately 1073 meters deep. The deepest part of the canyon is 1343 meters deep.

The Tara River Canyon, also known as the Tara River Gorge, is a canyon on the Tara River in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tara Canyon is the home to many different species of animals and plants, so visitors are surrounded with some truly marvelous nature while hearing the sounds of various critters and birds. There are also more than forty beautiful and exciting cascades, some of the most famous being Djavolje Lazi, Sokolovina and Bijeli Kamen. A must see is the Djurdjevica Bridge with it’s magnificent arches and surrounding greenery.

The Bosnian and the Montenegrin government initially had plans to flood the Tara Gorge and construct a hydroelectric dam on the Drina River. However, this plan was abandoned in April 2005 after several successful protests of advocates for the preservation of the canyon.

What is there to do

Tara Canyon has so much to offer. The most famous, and certainly the most adventurous sports, are whitewater river rafting and Tara River canyoning. So if you’re looking to get your blood pumping, Tara is the place. Canyoning involves going through some really inhospitable terrain where you’ll encounter some natural obstacles like narrow rocky paths, pools and waterfalls. The river is super fast so real adrenaline junkies will love it here. This type of extreme sport really isn’t for the weak seeing as you’ll need to walk through ice cold shallow water, push through some narrow and steep canyon walls as well as do some jumping off some cliffs and natural waterfalls. Not for the faint hearted…

Rock climbing is a ‘whole-body’ activity so aside from strengthening your whole body and raising your endurance you’ll also strengthen your focus and power of will as well as establish plenty of faith in yourself. If you’re looking for something just a little less frightening yet still adventurous, you can simply explore the beautiful nature by going hiking, trekking, mountain biking or try other different activities that Tara has to offer.
