Katherine Johnson, the sales and marketing manager at Blachford Lake Lodge and Wilderness Resort, was born into adventure travel. Her father founded the Great Canadian Travel Company in 1981 and at five years old Katherine was stickering brochures for the family business, at a rate of 0.25¢ per roll. She has run polar bear tours and managed a hotel in Churchill, Manitoba, and served as a board member for Nunavut Tourism. Katherine coached synchronized swimming for Winnipeg Synchro and also worked for Winnipeg Folk Festival. When not travelling herself (her life’s great passion) she lives with two dogs, a cat and her partner.
How do the experiences you offer at Blachford Lake Lodge and Wilderness Resort give guests a unique perspective on the history, people or culture of your region?
We offer a true wilderness experience, one that both new locals in the area, and Dene, who have lived here for many many years love. They give all visitors a true glimpse into remote life, while providing a safe, comfortable environment for exploration.
How have the experiences that you offer evolved since their inception?
From a one cabin operation, we now have a full service lodge with 5 guest rooms, 5 guest cabins, staff accommodation, hot tub, sauna, and more.
What is one detail of an experience you provide that may go unnoticed by guests, but which you feel is important?
I think we do a great job of showing off many details 😊 Sometimes people are too focused on taking photos, and forget to stop, listen to the silence and remember the experience of true wilderness.
What do you wish every guest knew as they consider booking a stay at Blachford Lake Lodge?
They’re going to have an amazing once in a lifetime experience. They come for the aurora and outdoor experiences, and want to stay for the people and the environment.
What is one unexpected piece of clothing or equipment guests should have to maximize their enjoyment of the experiences you offer?
When visiting in the winter, proper full winter gear rental! We understand that not everyone has gear designed for -40 and below, so we do offer full clothing rental options.
What is one travel trend that really excites you?
I love that people are excited about eco initiatives. We work very hard to keep our environment clean and healthy, and it’s exciting to see that more guests care about these steps that we take.
What is one insiders tip to getting the most out of an experiential travel vacation?
Be in the moment.
What is one strategy that has helped your business to grow?
Content is key! We have worked very hard to update our photo and video library. Also, to keep finding unique images that are special and specific to our location.
What is one personal habit that has helped you to be successful?
I love organization. 😊
Please share one instance where a guest had a moving or emotional reaction to the experience you provided to them.
We’ve had everything from proposals, to weddings, to first experiences of cold, a once in a lifetime/bucket list view of swirling aurora, to father/son fishing trips that have all left an impact on the lives of the staff and the visitors.
