Deryck Brockhurst started from very humble beginnings and got involved in many businesses both locally and Internationally before settling down to run Boshack Outback in Toodyay, Perth, Western Australia.

Deryck survived fairly traumatic experiences from his teenage years through the age of thirty, but he learned quickly that one needed to be positive to enjoy this wonderful life we have.  The Boshack Outback location was his four day getaway from stress, after four days in that environment, Deryck was like new again.  It was suggested that perhaps other people may enjoy a similar experience, and so, Deryck gives his guests the rejuvenating experience that he first had when coming to this place.

How do the experiences you offer at Boshack Outback give guests a unique perspective on the history, people or culture of your region of Australia?

Because we are Australiana in the Outback, which was naturally sustainable and peaceful, it is not hard to give people our history and culture depicting these features into today’s climate.

How have the experiences that you offer evolved since since you first started welcoming guests?

Because I am well on in years having experienced many early day lifestyles, and with a close scrutiny of the guests, nothing has changed in 80 years.

What is one detail of an experience you provide that may go unnoticed by guests, but which you feel is important?

Good question: because of the location it was my spot to de-stress from being in the fast lane in business both locally and internationally.  Everyone talks from the tree tops about how to de-stress, but my approach is to give visitors the tools (BBQ, accommodation, etc.) and allow them to work it out.  I believe the hidden agenda has much more effect in helping others to de-stress with them making the decision after the experience.  This is proven by the return clientele.

What do you wish every guest knew as they consider visiting at Boshack Outback and participating in the experiences you offer?

NOTHING.  Boshack attracts a special type of person who are here or have been sent here for an experience, I would hate for them to know anything.

What is one travel trend that really excites you?

I see the keenness to explore the unknown seems to be with a lot of people who visit us and by the personal questions they ask me.

What sets Boshack Outback apart from other, similar, destinations?

Simplicity, nature, sustainability, freedom.

What is one insiders tip to getting the most out of an experiential travel vacation?

Be happy when you talk to people, the response is amazing.

What is one strategy that has helped your business to grow?

Internet, self-explanatory. Nature, also self-explanatory.

What is one personal habit that has helped you to be successful?

Wind people up at every opportunity.

Please share one instance where a guest had a moving or emotional reaction to the experience you provided to them.

We have a special area to some people.  We stop there for a minute and listen to the wind.  People see things, feel things, and if they linger there have a feeling of relief come over them.  I feel or see nothing but I do feel a little as it’s a nice area to be.

I feel we need so many more locations like ours for the people who are ahead of the evolution process.
